improved performance when running Windows in enhanced mode
(this was added in PrintCache 2.5)
o A Windows application (PCWIN) that provides the same features
as the DOS popup (this was added in PrintCache 2.5)
o Printer status is reflected in the PrintCache icon when the
PCWIN program has been minimized and the PrintCache icon is on
the desktop
o Print direct to LPT1 and other parallel ports in Windows
(rather than LPT1.OS2)
o A brand-new install program that sets PrintCache up on your
hard disk
o Command line options can now be set with Install
o Printer type shown on DOS pop-up menu
o Improved interaction with Fonts-on-the-Fly and Printer Control
Panel when running under Windows
o New documentation
CHANGES IN THIS INLINE RELEASE OF PRINTCACHE 3.0
================================================
This release of PrintCache 3.0, dated July 14, 1992, contains some
new features not found in the initial release of PrintCache 3.0.
Here is some information on these new features.
Using XMS Memory for a Print Buffer
-----------------------------------
There is no longer any restriction on using XMS memory when you
are using an XMS memory manager such as Microsoft's HIMEM.SYS,
Qualitas' 386Max, or Quarterdeck's QEMM.
Drag-and-Drop Printing in Windows 3.1
-------------------------------------
PCWIN (the PrintCache control panel for Windows) now supports the
"drag-and-drop" features of Windows 3.1 for printing. You may
now print a file by dragging it from the Windows File Manager and
dropping it onto the PrintCache icon. (Make sure you drop it onto
the PrintCache icon on your desktop, not the PrintCache icon found
in one of your Program Manager program groups.) This feature is
also supported for Norton Desktop for Windows, and any other Windows
File Manager replacement which supports the Windows 3.1 drag-and-drop
conventions.
There is one limitation that you should be aware of: if you have two
printers connected to your PC, and are running two copies of PrintCache,
Windows will always print the file to the current default printer,
regardless of which icon you drop the file onto. For example, assume
that you have two PCWIN icons showing, one for LPT1 and one for LPT2.
If the default printer is the one on LPT1, the file will print to the
printer on LPT1 even if you dropped the file onto the PCWIN icon
showing LPT2.
Keeping the PCWIN Icon or Window Visible in Windows
---------------------------------------------------
You can now set PCWIN so that it will always be visible, even
if you have another Windows application maximized.
To do this, use PCWIN's Control menu. To display the Control menu,
click on the upper left hand corner of the PCWIN window. If PCWIN
is running, and has been reduced to an icon, you can display the
Control menu by clicking once on the icon. Choose "Always On Top"
to set PCWIN so that it is always visible.
When the "Always on Top" option is enabled, you will see a check
mark next to the "Always On Top" command on the Control menu. To
turn off this feature, choose "Always On Top" again.
PRINTCACHE, QUALITAS 386MAX AND WINDOWS 3.X
===========================================
When using the 386MAX memory manager and running under Windows 3.x,
you may notice loss of data from the PrintCache buffer when switching
between Windows 3.x and DOS applications. This is because 386MAX
unnecessarily creates a new running copy (instance) of PrintCache
in each DOS window. To fix this problem, locate the file 386LOAD.CFG
(normally found in your 386MAX directory) and use a text editor to
delete the line:
I PCACHE.COM 00/00/00
You will need to reboot your system for this change to take effect.
PRINTCACHE AND QUARTERDECK'S QEMM 6.0
=====================================
Some users have experienced problems when using PrintCache's interrupt
drivers in conjunction with QEMM 6.0's "Stealth" feature. This problem
can be avoided by using the XSTI= option when loading QEMM. This option
tells Stealth to exclude a specified interrupt. A listing showing ports,
their default interrupts, and the XSTI= value to use is given below:
Default
Port Interrupt XSTI=
---- --------- -----
LPT1 IRQ7 0F
LPT2 IRQ5 0D
COM1 IRQ4 0C
COM2 IRQ3 0B
For example, if you are running PrintCache with the Interrupt 7 driver,
and are experiencing problems with QEMM 6.0's Stealth feature, you should
load QEMM 6.0 with the "XSTI=0F" option as shown in the example below:
DEVICE=C:\QEMM\QEMM386.SYS [...] ST:M XSTI=0F
The "ST:M" option turns on the Stealth feature of QEMM. The "[...]"
indicates any other QEMM options which you normally use; these will
vary depending on your setup. The path shown above may be different
than that required for your system.
PRINTCACHE AND DOS 5.0 EDIT
===========================
There is a problem using PrintCache with DOS 5.0's EDIT program. If you
pop up the PrintCache menu while running EDIT, the computer may hang,
requiring you to reboot. Therefore, we recommend that you do not use
the pop-up menu while running EDIT.
WORDPERFECT FOR DOS USERS WITH EGA OR VGA SCREENS
=================================================
WordPerfect can configure EGA and VGA screens into 512 character mode,
rather than the normal 256 characters. When PrintCache pops up, the
menu is displayed in the wrong character set, and appears to be screen
corruption. The PrintCache pop-up menu commands still operate, and the
menu will pop down using X or Esc, properly restoring the WordPerfect
screen.
KEYBOARD PROBLEMS
=================
Some users with enhanced keyboards may encounter circumstances where
their keyboard switches into CapsLock or NumLock mode inappropriately
when using PrintCache. If this happens, use the /K command line option
to load PrintCache, for example:
C:\PCACHE\PCACHE /K
This should eliminate the problem.
PRINTCACHE, WINDOWS 3.X, AND THE DESKJET
========================================
When printing with Hewlett-Packard's "HP DeskJet Series v2.1" printer
driver under Windows, PrintCache may fail to capture the printer data.
That is, you can print, but data does not show up in the PrintCache
buffer. To fix this, follow the steps below (the example below assumes
you are printing to LPT1; substitute the appropriate port for your setup).
If you are using Windows 3.0
----------------------------
1. Open the Windows Control Panel, double-click on the Printers icon,
and highlight the DeskJet Series v2.1 entry in the Installed Printers
list.
2. Click on the Configure button.
3. Scroll the Ports list at left until you see LPT1.OS2.
Highlight the port that matches your PrintCache buffer port.
4. Click the Setup button and check all the parameters (i.e. printer
resolution, memory, cartridge, etc.) to make sure they are correct.
5. Click OK until you exit Windows Control Panel
If you are using Windows 3.1
----------------------------
1. Open the Windows Control Panel, double-click on the Printers icon,
and highlight the DeskJet Series v2.1 entry in the Installed Printers
list.
2. Click on the Connect button.
3. Click on the Fast Printing Direct to Port checkbox to remove the "X".
Once you have made these changes PrintCache should be able to buffer
the print data for your DeskJet. Note that PrintCache only has a
problem with the HP-supplied DeskJet Series v2.1 driver. PrintCache
works fine with earlier versions of the DeskJet Series driver, and
with the DeskJet drivers supplied by Microsoft with Windows 3.1.
PRINTCACHE AND PRINTER CONTROL PANEL
====================================
If you've been using Printer Control Panel ver. 2.2 with Windows, we
recommend that you delete the file GDX.DLL that can be found in your
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. This file was placed there by Printer
Control Panel, and is replaced by a new version of GDX.DLL which
PrintCache places in the \WINDOWS directory. Having both versions of
GDX.DLL in place has caused problems when running Norton Desktop for
Windows.
USING PRINTCACHE WITH NETWORKS
==============================
Load Order
----------
If you are using PrintCache on a network workstation, and must load
PrintCache before the network software, we recommend that you set
PrintCache's pop-up buffer option to use RAM instead of disk. To set
this option, run Install from the PrintCache directory, choose Basic
Settings, highlight the Pop-up Buffer menu at lower left, press Enter,
and choose the "Buffer Screen Contents to RAM" option. Alternatively,
you can load PrintCache using the /N command line option, for example:
C:\PCACHE\PCACHE /N
Novell's Link Support Layer (LSL.COM)
-------------------------------------
Novell's LSL.COM will not load successfully after PrintCache has loaded.
If possible, we recommend that PrintCache be loaded after LSL.COM.
Using PrintCache and Lacerte Software on a Novell Network
---------------------------------------------------------
If you are using PrintCache with Lacerte on a Novell network, it is
important that you do the following:
o Load PrintCache BEFORE the network is loaded
o Use Install to set the Popup Buffer to RAM, as described
above, or load PrintCache with a /N load parameter:
C:\PCACHE\PCACHE /N

Fonts-on-the-Fly for WordPerfect
--------------------------------
Fonts-on-the-Fly is the best darn font package for WordPerfect, period.
Fonts-on-the-Fly supports all WordPerfect 5.0 and 5.1 packages including
WordPerfect for Windows. No other font package can support these
claims:
o Is the fastest font technology available. It is three to ten
times faster than ATM, and will actually double the LaserJet
III's printing speed. A unique combination of hyper-optimized
font scaling code and super-efficient font caching makes
Fonts-on-the-Fly the fastest font product around, bar none.
o Brings real HP LaserJet III fonts and font scaling to all dot
matrix, inkjet, older LaserJet and LaserJet clone printers.
Completely eliminates the hassle of document reformatting when
you switch printers.
o Provides 19 hand-picked typefaces, each fully scalable from
1/4 to at least 250 points. Typefaces include CG Times and
Univers for LJ III compatibility, Garamond Antiqua for a more
elegant look, Futura Bold II for headlines with clout, Univers
Medium Condensed for clarity in a small space, scalable
Courier for workhorse projects, and Coronet for invitations
and announcements.
Fonts-on-the-Fly retails for $149, and is licensed on a per-printer
basis (like cartridge fonts). Call 1-800-767-8004 for more information.
Printer Control Panel
---------------------
Printer Control Panel is a vital utility program for PC users who are
printing to a PostScript printer. Many PC applications do not provide
drivers for the PostScript language, and users must manually switch
their printer into HP mode in order to print from these programs.
Printer Control Panel monitors the printer port and determines what type
of output is being sent by the program, and then automatically switches
the printer into the correct mode.
Printer Control Panel retails for $149, and is licensed on a per-printer
basis. It works in stand-alone and network environments.
